DESCRIPTION:Longtime Bluebird monitor and protector\, Herb Unkrich\, will share his knowledge from years of attracting and studying Bluebirds. Herb will share information on the types of nest boxes to use to attract Bluebirds\, where to place them\, and how to keep predators away from the Bluebirds’ nests and eggs. In addition to sharing his extensive knowledge from his experiences over the years\, Herb will also share some of his photographs of these beautiful birds.\n\nA retired engineer\, Herb started with a single Bluebird box in his backyard and waited several years for his first pair to nest in the box. That experience led Herb to place more and more boxes\, and after 45 years\, he now monitors 125 Bluebird boxes in the Peoria area. He is the District Coordinator and President of the East Central Illinois Bluebird Society. Last year\, Herb fledged out his all-time high of 969 baby Bluebirds. That is why Herb Unkrich prefers to be called “Bluebird Herb”.\n\nThis is a free program open to ages 18+. No registration is required.

Peterson\, Ph.D.\, Illinois State University Professor & Chair \nBrimfield Public Library\nMonday\, March 24th\n6:30pm \n-Free Program\n-Ages 18+\n-No Registration Required\n\nTo remedy the symptoms of urban stream syndrome\, artificial floating wetlands (AFW) were installed in segments of the Chicago River.  AFWs are an ecosystem created with a buoyant substrate that support plants and allow them to grow hydroponically\, with their roots dangling down into the water column. The typical focus of an AFW design is to provide low cost\, low maintenance water purification\, but AFWs can also protect shorelines\, beautify\, and create structure and habitat for riverine flora and fauna.  The utility of AFWs to improve water quality has been explored\, but the studies have been primarily microcosm/mesocosm experiments or system modeling\, with limited study of how AFWs work in open water systems.  The work on the Chiago River provides insight into the benefits of AFWs on flowing rivers.  The work investigated the effectiveness of a small (pilot) AFW to remediate an urban stream in a small section of the Chicago River. The pilot AFW was designed to improve the aquatic habitat and enhance the aesthetics of the stream segment.  However\, we examined whether an AFW provided any in-situ benefits by addressing the following questions:  1) Does the AFW decrease nutrient concentrations\, nitrate and phosphate\, within the water column?  2) Are chloride concentrations of waters upstream from the AFW greater than chloride concentrations of waters downstream from the AFW?  and 3) Are there seasonal differences in the effectiveness of an AFW to remove dissolved solutes?\n\nEric Peterson is a University Professor of Hydrogeology and Chair of the Department of Geography\, Geology\, and the Environment at Illinois State University.  Eric teaches a variety of courses on hydrogeology\, aquifer systems\, and surface water.  Eric’s research focuses on the interaction of surface water and groundwater with a focus on agricultural and urban settings.  Other aspects of his work include understanding the role of wetlands and saturated riparian buffers in improving the water quality from tile drained agricultural fields.  Eric was named a Fellow of the Geological Society of America in 2013 and was recognized as the Outstanding University Researcher at ISU in 2023.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, April 16th at 6:30pm\nBRIMFIELD PUBLIC LIBRARY\nFree Program • Ages 18+ • No Registration Required \nIn the mid 1800’s\, at the time of the “Great Hunger”\, sometimes known as the Irish Potato Famine\, the Mid-West was the western frontier of America. The influx of Celtic/Irish people in those times literally changed the face of America\, as they arrived seeking freedom and work on the great construction projects of the era. Their presence and stories still have an impact on our lives today. Through ancient myth and song\, as well as some original pieces\, Cloyd presents the history and heart of the Celtic people who came to the Mid-West in search of liberty and opportunity. \nBarry Cloyd is a Midwestern based\, award-winning\, touring singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist\, who typically performs more than 125 shows of all types per year. In addition to a concert schedule\, he was the resident stringed instrumentalist/vocalist/historian on The Spirit of Peoria Paddlewheel Riverboat for 22 years\, traveling the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers\, prior to its sale and departure from Peoria. Barry also has created and toured dozens of edu-tainment programs which focus on our own history with music. \nHe has shared the stage & recorded with many stars of the Blues and Americana worlds including members of Buddy Guy’s Band\, The Byrds\, Stephen Stills’ Bands\, EmmyLou Harris’ Band\, The Oak Ridge Boys\, John Denver’s and Dan Fogelberg’s Bands. In addition\, Barry has an on-going US/Mexican touring schedule with David Raitt\, brother of Bonnie Raitt\, 13 time Grammy winner. Barry is also a recording artist with 10 CD’s\, the last of which\, the all original “Southland”\, won an award for best Americana album in 2016\, which resulted in his tracks “Spirit Dance” and “Know This River” being placed in international radio rotation. \nBarry combines his original songs with traditional songs\, well-known and not so well known covers. An Americana artist\, Barry sticks a musical toe in all types of Roots Music waters: bluegrass and mountain music on 5-string banjo\, the Delta slide of Riverboat music on Dobro\, all manner of acoustic guitars\, including 4-string\, 6-string\,12-string\, high-strung\, altered tuned instruments\, mandolin\, and other things acoustic. In addition\, he is a strong vocalist and a prolific songwriter. Barry Cloyd has been earning a living by touring\, concerts\, song-writing\, and performing original edu-tainment programs for the past 25 years. \n  \n
