On Wednesday, January 20th, our email campaign to Governor Quinn & Comptroller Dan Hynes was a huge success!!  We were hoping for 6,000 emails but WOW they received over 15,000!!!  This proves how important libraries are to their communities!   As of Friday January 22, because of this huge response, all nine library systems in Illinois have received approximately 30% of their funding!  Together we make a loud noise which makes us really strong!!!  However, our work is not finished, please keep library funding issues in the minds of our legislators.  Libraries and library systems need adequate funding to insure quality services to our communities.  Thanks for your continued support!!!

Brimfield Public Library is a member of Alliance Library System.  Most people do not really know what library systems do or why they are so important.  Library systems in Illinois have not received any funding for the fiscal year that began on July 1, 2009.  Alliance has used their reserve money, and is at the brink of shutting down.  This will adversely affect all member libraries, including Brimfield, and all library users!  After reading the following information, please click on the link above, and tell our legislators how important funding for library systems is.  There is power in numbers, so the more noise we make, the better!!

What Are Library Systems, and Why Do They Matter?

About Illinois Library Systems

Illinois library systems provide essential services to over 2,200 Illinois libraries. Because of systems, libraries can better serve taxpayers throughout the state. Systems also take a leadership role in ensuring that library service is readily available to Illinois residents, no matter what their income, ethnic background, or where they live.

Illinois Library Systems are membership-based, regional organizations consisting of academic, public, school, and special libraries. Illinois is served by nine Library Systems, each providing services to participating libraries in its region.

Funding for Illinois Library Systems is provided through the Illinois State Library and the Secretary of State with funds appropriated by the Illinois General Assembly.

Why do we need library systems?

  • Systems make it possible for Illinois residents to use their public library cards at almost any Illinois library they choose to visit. Last year, over 9 million items were borrowed from other libraries, up from 7 million the year before.
  • System vans provide the physical delivery of over 28 million library items throughout the state. This is the hub that makes it possible for Illinois residents to acquire materials not available at their home library.
  • Systems support automated catalogs which make the collections of Illinois libraries accessible online and available for sharing with citizens of Illinois.
  • Systems save tax dollars by coordinating group purchases and providing cost-effective cooperative services to reduce duplicative costs. The group purchases save libraries up to 98% of the cost of a wide range of services, including many popular online resources. These resources are available to Illinois library card holders via the Internet 24/7.
  • Systems provide the necessary education and training to keep the more than 30,000 library staff and trustees up to date on new developments and resources and competent with new skills. Last year systems provided over 1,500 training opportunities.
  • Systems facilitate excellence in library services by providing consulting services, bringing library staff and trustees together to share best practices, and organizing joint projects.

What would happen to library service without library systems?

  • Without the system delivery service, libraries would not be able to share materials, greatly diminishing the resources of each and every library.  Illinois residents would only be able to check out materials of their home library.
  • Without the discounts negotiated by Systems, many libraries would no longer be able to afford to purchase many resources that help kids with homework, help people find jobs, and support accurate and thorough research for students, business owners, and municipal and civic organizations.
  • Libraries would lose essential support that makes it possible to work together in person and online. It will be much harder for libraries to work collectively, greatly diminishing options for improving services at individual libraries.
  • Library systems are one of the best examples of economic efficiency in the state, returning as much as $9 for each $1 of investment. Without the support and services of Systems, libraries would not be able to offer Illinois taxpayers the high quality programs and services they have come to expect.

Living Green!

In the parking lot of the Brimfield town building, located on Knoxville Street, across from the new car wash, there are 2 large green recycling containers for our community to use.  You can bring paper such as cardboard (please break-down boxes to conserve space), magazines, telephone books, office paper (no construction paper), & junk mail, aluminum, steel tin cans, light steel such as coat hangers, bicycles, etc., #s1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 7 plastic (#s are inside the recycling triangle) including grocery bags and bubble wrap.  Any items that contained food must be rinsed of any food waste.  A more complete listing of accepted items is on the container.  This service is co-mingled, so nothing has to be separated.  Please stop-in the library and leave a donation as weekly pick-up costs $50.00/month for each container.  Thanks to the Village of Brimfield for donating $50.00/mo. toward this service!  Thanks to Eagle Enterprises Recycling from Galva for making this service available to us!  Go Green!

The EPA estimates that it takes 1 plastic bag over 500 years to decay in a landfill.  Each person's plastic bag legacy will be 4.175 million years!  The worldwide consumption of plastic bags is over 500 billion, that's over 1 million per minute!  You can help the environment by buying green, reusable bags here at the library for only $1.00ea.  They are great for book bags, groceries, etc.!  Don't forget to switch out your ordinary light bulbs to energy saving fluorescent bulbs.  Simple ways to be kind to our environment!  Go Green!

Wireless Internet Access at the Library!

"Wifi" service allows those with a laptop computer, PDA, enabled cell phone, etc. to use our high speed Internet access with their own equipment and without wires!  If you don't know if your equipment is compatible, or has wireless capability, check with the sales staff where you purchased your equipment for help.  Come in and enjoy some coffee, or a soft drink while using our wireless high speed connection!

Reminder:  minor children (age 8 and over) coming to the library without adult supervision are expected to be at the library for library purposes.  The library staff does not provide childcare for children of any age.  Children under age 8 must be accompanied by an adult or responsible caregiver at all times while visiting the library.  Thanks for your cooperation!
