Longtime Bluebird monitor and protector, Herb Unkrich, will share his knowledge from years of attracting and studying Bluebirds. Herb will share information on the types of nest boxes to use to attract Bluebirds, where to place them, and how to keep predators away from the Bluebirds’ nests and eggs. In addition to sharing his extensive knowledge from his experiences over the years, Herb will also share some of his photographs of these beautiful birds.
A retired engineer, Herb started with a single Bluebird box in his backyard and waited several years for his first pair to nest in the box. That experience led Herb to place more and more boxes, and after 45 years, he now monitors 125 Bluebird boxes in the Peoria area. He is the District Coordinator and President of the East Central Illinois Bluebird Society. Last year, Herb fledged out his all-time high of 969 baby Bluebirds. That is why Herb Unkrich prefers to be called “Bluebird Herb”.
